As the overnight crew was settling in on a cold and very windy Christmas Eve night, units were dispatched to assist the Fresno FD with a garage fire at 2318 Hawthorn Brook Ln. Upon arrival of MCFRS Battalion 31 (Matthews) heavy fire was evident from the Division 1 attached garage of a 2-story SFD and Engine 31 (OIC Malloy) assigned as Division 1. With a handline streched thru the residence and water on the garage, SLFD Engine 3 (OIC Hiliger) was assigned as Division 2 and stretched a line upstairs. Upon making Division 2 substantial fire was found as was a large portion of floor over the garage being burned through as well as fire in the attic. As this information was being recieved, and Safety requesting command pull crews from inside given the holes, extension and high winds, knockdown was achieved on Division 2 and water placed on the fire in the attic. With the arrival of Engine 21 (OIC Ortega) the assignment of R.I.T. Group was given and at the request of Safety, set-up on Side "C" to allow better access to interior stairs should assistance be needed. After staging tools and throwing multiple ground ladders, the crew monitored conditions and radio traffic. Given the high winds and cold temperatures, an additional company was requested bringing SLFD Ladder 4 (OIC Muenster) to the fire where they set-up on Side "A" and began opening up exterior wall. Upon the situation being placed under control, Engine 21 assisted in opening up until being released and returning to the city at 23:14hrs.
